I had a really fun newborn portrait and family photography session in my Boulder studio a few months ago. I did a combination of just the baby, the baby with each family member, the family all together and some macro images of baby parts – a must have with newborn photography sessions. This little guy gave us some great opportunities to capture images of him sleeping and being fully awake.
I photographed this amazing family at Wonderland Lake in Boulder, Colorado. The kids had a great time running up and down the trail and the dogs enjoyed playing in the water. The mother of this family is the owner of Carley Barley, a local business in which she designs and creates baby clothes that are 100% organic and made with eco friendly dyes. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see some gorgeous babies modeling these adorable clothes. I photographed the images for the Carley Barley catalog and you can see more clothing and images here: www.carleybarley.com. Yay families!
I had another action packed portrait session with this family recently in Boulder. Their twin boys are now over a year old and their oldest child is just over three. The dog Caribe is now eleven. The kids’ parents and I chased them around the front yard for an hour and a half capturing images of them at play. This was a good combination of a family portrait and a lifestyle session in which you photograph a family doing things together, rather than posing for photographs. I think these make great, memorable images to be enjoyed for years to come. Even if they just remind you of how tired you were after the photo session!
This family and pet portrait session shows that you can’t have too much love in the house! Dixie and Mike are parents to three lovely adult girls and eight dogs of all ages which means lots of dog walking and sloppy kisses. From small to large, shy to outgoing, the personalities among dogs was varied in great ways! I made lots of loud noises while my assistant danced behind me to get everyone’s attention for our group photo. We successfully created a large family portrait to be remembered forever. Note: Sadly, since this session, the two Yorkies, Portia and Lucy passed away. Hopefully the photos will help to bring some comfort.
Jax, a bouncing baby boy, joined his three sisters for the family’s annual photo session in Boulder. The girls had a great time showing off their new baby brother and just being silly for a few of their own portraits. Over the years, each girl has taken turns doing a “tea party” photo using the same tea party table and chairs that their mother was photographed with when she was a girl. I’ve included a couple of these precious images!
On a recent pet portrait session, my goal was to capture the bond between Lyn and her best friend Lizzy and to also create an image in silhouette. The bond was obvious and could not be denied! I was also lucky enough to have an amazing sunset and was able to get a silhouette showing their bond.
First I photographed the engagement session, then I photographed the wedding, and then the pregnancy. And then I photographed Luke as a newborn and again at three months, six months, nine months and at age one – blueberry pie include! (see photo at the end of this post). Now Luke has two beautiful baby brothers who I had a great time photographing as newborns and again at eight months. Newborn photography and children’s photography is always lots of fun, but it is double the fun when I get to photograph them over and over again as they grow. Soon I will post their latest photos, taken recently, now that the twins are over a year old. Which means there was lots of running and chasing going on!
Taking just a little time each year for an annual family portrait is a great way to keep your photo albums up to date and to record the growth of your family. Time goes by so quickly and your little ones will be grown before you know it. Being able to look back at these visual reminders later in life will prove to be worthwhile. So, if it is time for your family photography session in Boulder, or other places nearby, hurry up and give us a call!
While on vacation in Massachusetts a few years ago, a friend asked if I’d take some portraits of her horse. His name was Happy and the name sign on his stall said “Choose Happy”. I was in awe of his size, his spirit and his gentle demeanor. We walked around the pasture taking photos and several juveniles saw the activity and ran up to me, sniffing, nibbling on my camera strap and bouncing around. Thank goodness my friend Alix was there to keep the teenagers under control.

This is my mother, aka The Fairy Queen. We created these photos last summer in a park near my home in Boulder. We put together the costume, made the crown and had a blast walk through the park taking fairy portraits and being looked at by children of all ages excited to see a real fairy. We were even approached by a fairy friendly dog!
