I’m a sucker for a beaded flapper dress and a gorgeous gal and MUST make beautiful images! I bought this dress on line for an obscenely low price and put out a call for a model among people I know. Lindsay stepped right up and this dress was made for her!
This Women’s Contemporary Portrait session was done at my Boulder studio in my home. I hand painted the backdrop, with the help of my talented husband. These type of sessions are really fun. We get to play dress up, do up your hair and makeup and create amazing images that you will have for a lifetime. You, your children, grandchildren and other family members will truly cherish these images now and way down the line, many years from how. Imagine your grandchild seeing images like these and saying “Wow! that’s my Grandma!”
I believe this was the sixth time I’ve done family portraits for this beautiful family since their oldest daughter was barely two years old. I love documenting a family’s growth through the years and providing them with images to remember many of their wonderful moments. When I photograph a family with children, I of course photograph them all together but I also photograph just the kids together, each individual child, and each child alone with each parent. I think that when each child becomes an adult they will not only cherish their family photos but will also cherish the images they have of just themselves with their mother or father. These images prove to be intimate and memorable and express the feelings they shared for each other in their young lives. I also make sure to do a portrait of just mom and dad together. These portraits were done on campus in Boulder, Colorado.
I photographed this amazing family at Wonderland Lake in Boulder, Colorado. The kids had a great time running up and down the trail and the dogs enjoyed playing in the water. The mother of this family is the owner of Carley Barley, a local business in which she designs and creates baby clothes that are 100% organic and made with eco friendly dyes. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see some gorgeous babies modeling these adorable clothes. I photographed the images for the Carley Barley catalog and you can see more clothing and images here: www.carleybarley.com. Yay families!
Mango and Teagan visited with me at my Boulder Photography Studio to have their portraits done. Quite the playful pair, these two live together with their humans in Longmont. Mango has a special job. He is a therapy dog and he and his mom visit with patients at Longmont United Hospital to lift their spirits during difficult times. I really enjoyed playing them in the studio and giving them lots of treats in exchange for their fun and silly poses for the camera. They are both absolutely beautiful!
Here are a few of my favorite images from a recent family portrait session I did at Davidson Mesa in Louisville, Colorado. If you go up there in the mid to late afternoon, the light from the west is blinding. But wait just a little while, for the sun to tuck behind the mountains and it’s magical! I had such a good time photographing this family and oohing and aahing over the light and colors of the sky. The kids, and the dog, had a great time running around on the path and playing in the tall, dry grasses – and playing with mom and dad while I took lifestyle photos. I liked this photo location so much that I recently took my own family there for our family photos. That’ll be another blog post soon.
I had another action packed portrait session with this family recently in Boulder. Their twin boys are now over a year old and their oldest child is just over three. The dog Caribe is now eleven. The kids’ parents and I chased them around the front yard for an hour and a half capturing images of them at play. This was a good combination of a family portrait and a lifestyle session in which you photograph a family doing things together, rather than posing for photographs. I think these make great, memorable images to be enjoyed for years to come. Even if they just remind you of how tired you were after the photo session!
While on vacation in Massachusetts a few years ago, a friend asked if I’d take some portraits of her horse. His name was Happy and the name sign on his stall said “Choose Happy”. I was in awe of his size, his spirit and his gentle demeanor. We walked around the pasture taking photos and several juveniles saw the activity and ran up to me, sniffing, nibbling on my camera strap and bouncing around. Thank goodness my friend Alix was there to keep the teenagers under control.

This is my mother, aka The Fairy Queen. We created these photos last summer in a park near my home in Boulder. We put together the costume, made the crown and had a blast walk through the park taking fairy portraits and being looked at by children of all ages excited to see a real fairy. We were even approached by a fairy friendly dog!
I had so much fun photographing the Johnson Family this past December. We used two studios and then went outside for some fun in the snow. I’ve been photographing the Johnson’s for 6 years and the word that always comes to mind is JOYFUL!

This past fall I had the pleasure of photographing Shari and her twin daughters Grace and Ali. I first photographed the twins when they were 2 weeks old – wow has time flown by!
The last photo in this series is our own mock up of the girls favorite book series, “Canterwood Crest”. The girls in the book are snobbish, high society, relentless school girls who ride horses. Grace and Ali are anything but snobbish, high society, relentless school girls so we got a lot of laughs acting up for this photo (but they DO ride horses). (check it out – it is done like the book cover, title included).
